Caminho dos Burros - guided hike through the highlands of Pico to the north coast
Embark on a hike through history from the fairytale highlands of Pico down to the picturesque bay of Baía de Canas with its numerous adegas. Today's hiking trail, “Caminho dos Burros” (Donkey Trail), was formerly a farm track that connected the north and south sides of the island. Goods were transported from one side to the other along this trail with the help of pack donkeys. Today's hiking trail first takes you across the plateau, past various endemic plants and beautifully shaped small lava cones. The first section of the descent winds its way past enchanting moss-covered trees covered in lichen and lush ferns. During the hike, the vegetation and soil conditions change several times. Your path takes you through a beautifully landscaped forest park and then back along a historic trail to the end point – the beautiful Baía de Canas bay, planted with all kinds of reeds. Enjoy the hike in the footsteps of history and the unobstructed views of the blue Atlantic Ocean and the neighboring island of São Jorge.

Elevation gain: approx. 800 m (mostly downhill)
