Diving around Pico and Faial
The slopes of the mid-Atlantic ridge emerge from a depth of 3,000 metres. Their peaks rise out of the ocean and form the Azores archipelago. Various ocean currents break against this enormous underwater mountain range, creating the so-called “upwelling”. The upwelling water transports nutrients to the surface and, together with sunlight, forms a rich food source. The underwater life around the Azores is therefore extremely diverse and makes the islands one of the most interesting diving spots in the world.
Underwater lava slopes and tunnels are home to the typical West Atlantic marine life with crustaceans, parrotfish, groupers, snappers, moray eels, rays and all kinds of invertebrates.
In good weather conditions, various wrecks can be approached, such as the "P 16" at a depth of 24-28 metres, or the the “Viana” at a depth of 45-50 metres. The wrecks can only be explored by experienced divers.
During night dives, millions of shrimps, nudibranchs, moray eels, bear crabs and octopus can be observed. If you look into the open, blue ocean while diving, you will have the opportunity to spot shoals of barracuda, mackerel and bonito. The cheeky triggerfish are also always present.
Along the coasts of Pico, Faial and Sao Jorge, more than 30 dive sites have been explored in recent years, offering exciting dives for less experienced divers and old hands alike. Shoals of tuna, king mackerel and barracuda await in the deep blue. There are also schools of mobula rays and various species of shark.
One of the highlights of a diving holiday are the dives on the offshore rock pinnacles, which extend from the seabed to just below the surface. These mostly current-exposed sites are home to the large inhabitants of the sea. However, these sites can only be dived in optimal current and weather conditions.

1. offshore diving at the "Princess Alice Bank"
2. shark diving in open water
3. shore diving from land or by boat
