Newly opened in 2020, Porto Velho Boutique Hostel is centrally located in Madalena, the island’s largest town, right by its old harbour. The accommodation with seven double rooms and three bedrooms with four or six beds is situated in the northwest of the island of Pico. This newly renovated property with modern amenities offers a communal lounge, a lounge with tea and coffee utensils, and a private furnished courtyard. Its central location means that the boutique hostel is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, pastry shops, grocery stores, and restaurants, as well as beautiful bathing spots in the sea. The ferry port with ferry connections to the neighbouring islands of Faial and São Jorge is just a few minutes’ walk away, too. A historical wine-growing area, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, is only about 3 km from the guesthouse and has a hiking and walking trail along the many black basalt walls built to protect the vines. The wines produced on the island of Pico can be tasted at the wine cooperative, just 900 metres away. The Porto Velho boutique hostel is ideal for travellers who appreciate the liveliness of a town with good infrastructure while not wishing to take their car everywhere. Breakfast is not offered, but the inexpensive cafes and confectionery shops in the direct vicinity offer an easy solution here.
