Argonauta

The name Argonauta means "brave seafarer" and is the name of this traditional house, which is located in Fajã Grande, the westernmost place in Europe. Originally built more than three hundred years ago, the historical building was carefully renovated in 1929 and was equipped with the first bathroom in Fajã Grande and also the only piano on the island, a loving restoration down to the last detail.
New-Argonauta is in its 27th year of operation, the old tradition continues to live. The owners tried to preserve the largest traditional fire irons imported into Flores. All the traditional woodwork auctioned, also parts of the shipwreck “Brilliant” a Norwegian logger, which crashed at the western reef of Flores in 1899. Also important wall paintings from the year 1930 were restored. That's why it's not surprising that no room resembles the other and that each room has an individual name. The inner courtyard is an ideal place to relax in the summer, observe rural life, enjoy delicious food, take a break or sip a drink.

Location (approx.): in Fajã Grande near the parish church, ocean swimming in the village, airport 20 km

Rooms: a total of 5 rooms with private bathroom, including 3 suites, all rooms are built of solid volcanic stone and wood.
Room Courelas on the 1st floor: Courelas means "small landowner". It’s also the name of a small part of Fajã Grande (consisting of about twenty houses and barns, crossed by a small street of the same name, seen through the room window). The wood used in the room comes from the shipwreck of the “Brilliant” and was painted with oil paint in 1930. The bathroom with shower, bidet and hairdryer, is mostly made of the local basalt stone. The room is equipped with wooden shelves, a small fridge, a closet and a desk. The room is comparable with the one in the courtyard, it is only slightly smaller and has no direct access to the courtyard.
Courtyard room on the 1st floor: The inner courtyard room got its name because it has direct access to the staircase that leads into the courtyard of the Argonauta. In front of this staircase is a small corridor, which also prevents any external noise, which leads to the bathroom with shower and hairdryer. The room, one of the three best rooms in the house, is equipped with a desk, a sofa, chair and rocking chair, wardrobe, small refrigerator and a built-in pine wood cabinet with a frame from 1929. An extra bed for a third person is available upon request.
Northwest suite on the 2nd floor: This room has two large roof windows with a fabulous view of the rock island of Monchique to the north. The mountains and waterfalls are to the east. The suite provides a small terrace facing west with a great view of the sunset in the Atlantic Ocean. This large room (60 m2) and its counterpart (Southwest suite) are the splendours of the Argonauta. This suite features a small refrigerator, sofa bed, table and upholstered chairs, rocking chair, heater, fan, water cooker and a CD player. The bathroom has a shower, bidet, hairdryer and many details from basalt stone. The wardrobe is lit directly by the sunlight, and the bed and mattresses have the extraordinary length of 205cm, which guarantees perfect sleeping comfort for everyone. The northwest suite provides space for two or three, with bed sofa even for four and five persons. Curtains can be used to divide the room.
Southwest suite on the second floor: every sailor of the North Atlantic awaits the best comfort. The interior of the southwest suite is illuminated by a large roof window, which offers a fantastic view of the eastern mountains and waterfalls. The second window shows the coasts of Fajã Grande and Courelas. From the balcony you can enjoy the beautiful sunset view above the ocean, the church and the westernmost houses of Europe. The bathroom has a bathtub and hairdryer and the bed is equipped with a latex mattress (160x200 cm.). The slate doors of the wardrobe provide ideal ventilation for the clothes. A sofa, table, cushioned chairs, rocking chair, CD player, heater, fan, water cooker, small fridge help to relax and to feel comfortable. The 60 m2 can accommodate up to five persons with additional beds and a sofa bed. Curtains can be drawn to divide the room.
Suite 2000 on the 1st floor: This room is similar to a 1-room apartment/ studio and has direct access to the communal courtyard, just like the Inner Courtyard. 2 people can sleep in a comfortable double bed (140x200 cm) with bio-latex mattresses; a third person can comfortably sleep on a sofa bed. This suite is the only room on the property that has a fully equipped kitchenette. Also a wood-burning stove is part of the facilities. The bathroom is very unique, since it was built in 1929 as the first bathroom of the village.
