Quinta do Martelo

The traditionally stylish Quinta do Martelo is a former orange farm, just 7 km away from the UNESCO World Heritage city of Angra do Heroísmo. At the peak of the orange-growing and exporting business, many oranges found their way from the farm to the European continent. Later, the oranges were replaced by the cultivation of vines and the production of wine and liquors. Today, many different types of fruit can be found on the grounds of the Quinta do Martelo. The owners of the Quinta have succeeded in preserving and reviving the original stock of historic buildings, their workshops and related traditions. These go back to the beginning of the colonization of the islands. On this account, the Quinta was classified as an ambience with "Great Benefit for Tourism" by the Azorean Regional Government. The former farm welcomes its guests in a genuine historic rural ambience. Here, guests can experience what life was like five centuries ago on a traditional, rural farm on the island of Terceira, though with the added value of contemporary comfort. The experience includes culinary delicacies, traditional costumes and festivities and, of course, the houses and their facilities. Today, the owners run organic farming on the grounds of the farm, whose tasty products can be found on the breakfast buffet and in the restaurant’s dishes.

Elder’s House: this house (T1) is the reconstruction of a 16th century building called the "House of the Elder’s". It stems from the tradition of the whereabouts of parents whose children moved out to lead their own lives. The house has a sleeping area with a traditional queen-size bed, which is given privacy in the original way by a reed wall. Below the sleeping area is a storage room with antique tools, in which there is a lot to discover. The kitchen in the main hall combines traditional and modern elements. The house has a private, modern bathroom. Throughout the building there are many former utensils and previous models of today's furniture.
Farmhouse: the farmhouse (T3, suitable for a max. of 7 persons) provides 3 bedrooms (2 with queen size double beds and 1 with two single beds), 2 bathrooms, 1 traditional and 1 modern kitchen, 1 living room (with sofa bed) and a garden (with an ecological small kitchen garden). The house was formerly used as a storage room for oranges and was later transformed into a farmhouse. From the time of the orange trade as well as the subsequent farmhouse era there are still many pieces of furniture, tools and appropriate adjustments to discover within the house. Since the house has been enlarged in the course of its history, some former exterior walls are now part of the interior of the house. Formerly the oranges were brought out through a door which was transformed into a window later. While orange boxes were used as improvised sleeping beds at the time of the orange trade, the kitchens with traditional stoves derive from the peasant times. Handcrafted partitions testify to the redesign of the house to create more living space.
Settler’s House: the Settler's House (T1, suitable for 2 persons) has 1 bedroom (with queen size double bed), 1 modern bathroom and 1 fully equipped kitchenette. This building is a reconstruction of a traditional house, as it was built and inhabited by the first settlers of the island. It was decorated with some interesting ornaments. In those simply designed houses from that time, the areas for sleeping, eating, cooking and storing were set up in each corner of the house. The former kitchenette provided a fireplace without oven and a stone for baking the bread. In the former sleeping corner there were a primitive table and chairs made of local cedars (Juniperus Breviola), as well as a primitive bed with a woolen blanket. In the storage area stood a wooden box where almost everything was stored - even grain. In addition to the modern elements in the house there are still all sorts of antique everyday objects to be discovered (such as an oil lamp and various kitchen tools). The contemporary interior design uses local woods as well as the original traditions of construction and woodcarving.
Double or single room: the Quinta do Martelo also offers double and single rooms, each with private bathroom. As in the other 3 houses, modern elements are integrated into the traditional ambience.
Meals: breakfast with organic ingredients and regional products (such as honey, fruit, bread and cheese); lunch and dinner bookable in the attached restaurant
Others: traditional festivities bookable; children and family friendly facilities; barrier-free parking; pets allowed (free of charge); car rental on site
