Pelagic bird watching on Faial island

Naturalist, the organizer of the activity, states: Since the Azores archipelago is located centrally in the North Atlantic, it allows the observation of migratory birds, which are distracted off their usual route by the weather. But it is also possible to observe seabirds, breeding in the Azores, which are considered endemic species and subspecies. There you will also find the world’s most important breeding bird populations of the Yellow-billed Shear Diver (Calonectris diomedia borealis) and the Roseate Tern (Sterna dougallii). The archipelago houses about 30 different breeding bird species. The number of observed species in the Azores extends to about 400; some of them are very rare in the Western Palearctic.

Join in for the search of the sea birds of the Western Palearctic. The tour leads to the feeding grounds of pelagic birds, such as undersea rocks; in addition bait is laid out to attract less common species. A marine biologist will be on board to collect data and provide guests of the tour with a unique experience with up-to-date information on marine life. 15 minutes of the tour are used for data collection; everyone is welcome to participate. Binoculars for the observation of the birds are provided during the tour.

On the tour it’s quite likely to get to see other marine species such as dolphins, whales, sharks, turtles, etc.

Duration: 4-5 hours, tour starts at 8:30 am at the port in Horta
Guides: the tour will be guided by an experienced skipper, as well as an ornithologist.
